Lymph is a pretty stealth system of the body. Sometimes called the clean up crew, the sewer system, or the hidden hero, the lymphatic system is a circulatory system that sorts out toxin removal in the body. Unlike the blood’s movement driven largely by the pumping of the heart, the lymph system mostly moves lymph as a secondary process resulting from breathing, muscle contractions and general movement.
For time immemorial various indigenous and BIPOC community massage modalities have stimulated lymph circulation in practice.
Our training in MLD is through the Dr. Estrid and Emil Vodder school techniques. “Dr. Vodder method of Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) is a method developed in France in the 1930s. It is used…to enhance fluid movement in the skin. It also has a very powerful relaxing and calming effect on the nervous system. The gentle, rhythmic, pumping, massage movements follow the direction of lymph flow and produce rapid results…This is a gentle, non-invasive manual technique that has a powerful effect on the body.” Research in Australia, Europe and North America has proven its efficacy as a stand-alone treatment and in combination with other therapies for digestion, sleep support, sports recovery, arthritis, headaches, chronic pain, lessening the grip of trauma’s impact on the autonomic nervous system, among others (Source: Dr Vodder International). More advanced treatment includes MLD for whiplash, burns, migraines, tinnitus, CRPS, stroke, supination trauma for the ankle, knee arthroplasty, cruciate ligament repair, adhesive capsulitis and hip pathologies. Our studio does not provide complex lymphedema treatment or management at this time.

The American Massage Therapy Association gives a pretty good rundown of deep tissue massage. Deep tissue focuses on slower application of technique, typically with more pressure (which many people describe as more intense), which allows accessing multiple layers of fascia and muscular tissue. Sometimes bruising and sensitivity may result; and folks may find themselves energized as opposed to relaxed following the treatment. Note: highly variable by person.

I aspire to be wholly client-centered, trauma-informed, gender-affirming, accessible, intentional, compassionate, and welcoming of all bodies. Part of this work is combatting the systemic structures that make healthcare cost-prohibitive for most people in this society. Because of the legacy of racism, patriarchy, colonialism & plunder enacted upon many and particularly the lives of people of color, I acknowledge that systemic inequality is the norm. To try to do my part in counteracting this reality, I offer at least two no-cost sessions per month to BIPOC (by request from anyone seeking treatment). Recognizing the conditions we are living under in these times, I also offer no-cost sessions to those directly impacted by immigration policy and to trans- folks.
My 60 minute sessions at sliding scale and are valued at $75-$95 for mixed method massage and MLD.
The sliding scale is $25-$95.
90 Minute Sessions are fixed at $120
Please refer to the policy below & find a rate that is right for you.
SLIDING SCALE POLICY
Consider paying between $25-45/hour if you:
• are a person who experiences racism directed at you
• have regularly occurring medical expenses not covered by insurance
• have mental health and/or addiction and/or chronic pain issues
• have immigration-related expenses
• are an elder with limited financial support
• are an unpaid community organizer
• are supporting children or have other dependents
• are a returning citizen who has been denied work due to incarceration history
• are descended from enslaved peoples or indigenous peoples
• are transgender and experience trans related discrimination and/or violence regularly
• are gay/queer and experience related discrimination and/or violence regularly
• engage in sex work due to limited access to other forms of work
Consider paying between $65-95 on the scale if you:
• benefit from race privilege
• have investments, retirement accounts, or inherited money
• travel recreationally
• have access to family money and resources in times of need
• work part time by choice
• have a relatively high degree of earning power due to level of education, gender privilege, racial privilege, class background, etc. Even if you are not currently exercising your earning power, I ask you to recognize this as a choice.
Other things to consider:
Consider paying less on the scale if you feel as though multiple sessions will benefit you. Many people benefit from recurring treatment as preventative care and regular massage be highly supportive, rather than sporadic or once-off. Bodywork is an incredible resource and collective healing is nourished by individual healing modalities, too.
Added considerations:
When I pay more, I know that I am balancing out inequity so the therapist & clients who have less resource privilege can support themselves.
When I pay in the middle, I know I am helping the therapist cover costs.
And when I pay at the bottom, I know I am letting my community hold me and support me.
All of these are acceptable ways of participating.
